Scenario-Based Microlearning

Value-DRiven Success

Snapshot

To meet the needs of a pharmaceutical client’s global sales team, I designed an engaging and scalable asynchronous e-learning course on the Value-Based Sales methodology. This project required transforming an existing virtual instructor-led training into a fully interactive digital format that could be accessed in 15 languages.

Audience

The primary audience was the client’s global pharmaceutical sales team, spanning diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The learners needed an easily accessible, self-paced course that provided practical tools to enhance their sales approach.

Confidentiality Note

While the original course was specifically tailored to the pharmaceutical industry and included gamified elements, the linked microlearning sample demonstrates my ability to create effective, scenario-based training on Value-Based Sales in a general context. This sample is designed to showcase my instructional design and content creation skills without violating client privacy.

THE CHALLENGE

The client’s original challenge was to scale their Value-Based Sales methodology training globally while addressing logistical and cultural complexities. Their virtual instructor-led training had been effective but required significant resources and time to deliver repeatedly across their global sales teams. Specific challenges included:

    Scalability

Designing a course that could be quickly distributed to sales teams worldwide.

    Adaptability

Ensuring the content was relevant and relatable for learners across 15 languages and diverse cultural backgrounds.

    Engagement

Translating the hands-on, conversational aspects of the original course into a self-paced learning format without compromising learner engagement.

    Timeframe

Delivering a high-quality, localized course within three months.

    THE SOLUTION

To address the challenge of adapting the virtual, instructor-led pharmaceutical Value-Based Sales course into an asynchronous e-learning experience, I developed a scenario-based learning journey that would effectively mirror the strengths of the original course. Additionally, to preserve client confidentiality while showcasing my expertise, I designed a microlearning course on general Value-Based Sales principles using similar design methodologies.

      Course Development Approach

I selected Articulate Rise as the platform for the original course and the microlearning due to its flexibility, adaptability, and ability to support standardized, multilingual versions. This decision ensured:

      • Faster content population across 15 language versions.
      • Consistent formatting and compatibility across devices.
      • A seamless user interface to enhance learner accessibility.

Given the tight deadline and the client’s need for a simple adaptation of the successful virtual course, I opted for the SAM (Successive Approximation Model). This iterative design process enabled rapid prototyping, collaboration, and timely delivery.

      Content Design and Structure

The original course was designed as a gamified scenario-based journey where learners navigated a city map as pharmaceutical representatives to build their client base. Each map location represented a different phase of the Value-Based Sales process which included:

      • Theoretical Content
      • Interactive micro-assessments (e.g., multiple-choice quizzes, drag-and-drop exercises).
      • And a final branching-scenario sales simulation.

      Collaboration & Feedback

I collaborated closely with the original course’s SME to ensure alignment with the pharmaceutical context, drawing heavily from their slides and expertise. For the microlearning course, I restructured and generalized the content while retaining the original’s emphasis on practical application.

      Throughout the project, I:

      • Reviewed course scenarios with the SME for realism and engagement.
      • Incorporated feedback from the client’s L&D team to refine design and user flow.
      • Ensured tools integration into the client’s LMS system.

      Unique Features of the Course

      Gamified Elements

To immerse learners in a pharmaceutical representative’s journey.

      Branching Simulation

Allowed learners to practice what they learned in the course adjusting the outcomes and direction of the conversation based on their response selection.

      Skill Badges

Rewarded learners for their progression in the course.

      Downloadable Templates

gave learners additional tools to use outside the course for their future endevors.

      Feedback Integration

I collaborated closely with the SME who facilitated the original training, ensuring the scenarios were realistic and the content was effective. Additionally, the client’s L&D team tested the course, providing feedback that informed iterative refinements. Unfortunately we couldn’t test the course on the target audience ahead of the launch due to the target constraints and client limitations.

      MY PROCESS

      u
      Phase 1: Identifying Needs

The project began with an in-depth meeting with the client to define the learning objectives and desired outcomes. I worked to understand their priorities, including practical tools for sales improvement, global adaptability, and learner engagement through interactive elements.

      d
      Phase 2: Outlining & Storyboarding

I used action mapping to align the course flow with the client’s objectives. This included designing a narrative framework, drafting storyboards for each module, and ensuring every element supported the learners’ real-world application of skills.

      j
Phase 3: Content Development & Collaboration

I collaborated closely with the SME to refine content, ensuring it was both accurate and accessible. Prototypes were built to test the functionality and visual direction, keeping the client updated throughout.

      Phase 4: Testing and Iteration

After initial development, I conducted a review with the SME to validate realism and accuracy. The client’s L&D team tested the course for user experience and alignment, providing valuable feedback that informed iterative improvements.

      Phase 5: Delivery

The English version of the course was finalized and delivered on schedule, serving as the foundation for the multilingual rollout. Once translations were approved, the localized versions were seamlessly populated onto the existing course structure. The client was very happy with how polished and engaging the final product was.

      RESULTS & IMPACT

      Outcomes

The course was successfully delivered to the client on schedule, meeting their requirements for an interactive and scalable learning solution. While I do not have access to performance data yet, the client reported high satisfaction with the course content and design.

      Stakeholder Feedback

The SME consultant praised the course for its insightful and accessible material, remarking that the simulation was impressively realistic and engaging. Both the client and SME appreciated the course concept and its alignment with their training goals.

      Lasting Value

This course not only addressed the client’s immediate training needs but also provided a flexible framework for scalable, multilingual implementation. By focusing on realistic scenarios and practical tools, the course equipped learners with actionable insights they could directly apply to their roles.

      REFLECTIONS & TAKEAWAYS

      Challenges and Problem-Solving

One of the primary challenges was navigating the constraints imposed by the client’s timelines and platform limitations. For example, I had to adapt a gamified concept to a platform with limited creative flexibility (Rise). By leveraging innovative workarounds, I designed a visually engaging and interactive course despite these constraints. Additionally, managing translations and ensuring consistency across 15 languages required meticulous attention to detail and effective collaboration with the client’s team.

      Lessons Learned

This project reinforced the importance of clearly identifying all available resources and potential constraints during the initial planning phase. While I successfully adapted to challenges as they arose, earlier anticipation of these issues would have streamlined the process further.

      Showcasing My Skills

This course demonstrated my ability to create innovative, learner-focused content within restrictive platforms, showcasing adaptability and creative problem-solving. It also highlighted my expertise in collaborating with diverse teams, managing tight deadlines, and delivering scalable learning solutions.

      Future Application

Moving forward, I plan to incorporate more proactive resource mapping and time allocation strategies into my design process. This project has also strengthened my confidence in creating scalable e-learning solutions for global audiences, ensuring both flexibility and cultural relevance.
